What ever is comfortable for you. i have mine mounted that way for that reason. just remember that if you need to use it as a vice for working smaller pieces that you can use your hand tools and other tools comfortably.. That's what i did with my first 7" yost vise (great vise btw) and my second 7" yost vise is going to be placed on the face of the bench on the left hand side outside the leg: workbench this image shows the placement of my current vise and the recess i've cut for the second vise that will be going in shortly.. A solid bench vise is like an extra set of very strong hands, and having one can actually improve your work. here's a little information to help you pick the one that makes the most sense for your shop..
